Florida-based podcast host Tom Woods criticized the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for the organization’s tweet about the execution of convicted murder Duane Owen.
“Check out the Community Note on this one, tweeted Woods. "You'll never believe it — the ACLU left out a teensy-weensy detail.”
Woods was referring to a tweet by the ACLU that said, “The state of Florida never provided medically necessary gender-affirming care to Duane Owen — causing her enormous suffering and violating her right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment for the more than 30 years she was in state custody.”
Twitter users added a “community note” to the ACLU's tweet that said, “Duane stabbed 14-year-old Karen Slattery 18 times, killing her, then raped her corpse. He committed murder again years later.” That "community note" linked to a CBS News article about Owen’s execution.
“Owen was sentenced to death for the March 24, 1984, rape and fatal stabbing of Karen Slattery, 14, and for the rape and deadly hammer attack two months later on Georgianna Worden, 38,” reported CBS News.
“Slattery was repeatedly stabbed and raped in a home in Delray Beach while two children in her care were sleeping,” said the report. “Two months later, in May 1984, Worden was sleeping in her Boca Raton home when Owen struck her several times with a hammer and raped her, according to court records.”
Owen’s defense attorneys argued that Owen had “gender dysphoria” but “psychiatrists for the state said Owen had a good memory, didn't appear to present himself as female and that gender dysphoria doesn't make people more aggressive or cause delusional thinking,” said the report.
Woods, 50, lives in Harmony, Fla., according to his Twitter account. He is a senior fellow at the Mises Institute and host of “The Tom Woods Show” podcast. In 2004, Woods authored the book, “The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History.”
