A Florida deputy stopped a go-fast boat on Monday morning where more than 30 Cuban migrants were found hiding. Overall, there were four suspected migrants and three children of 5, 4 and 1.5 years of age, according to an Oct. 11 release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
"Sgt. Joel Slough was on patrol at approximately 6 a.m. when he saw a rental truck pulling a large vessel northbound near 107th Street slower than the speed limit," Monroe County Sheriff's Office stated in the release. "Sgt. Slough performed a traffic stop. Sgt. Slough noted the children in the truck, the lack of child safety seats as well as the overwhelming smell of saltwater and body odor."
Sgt Slough was on patrol when he noticed a rental truck pulling a boat under the speed limit on U.S. 1 in Marathon, Fox News reported Oct. 12.
The deputy noticed there were three children in the truck improperly buckled or restrained, and at least two dozen migrants were found hiding in the v-berth area of the boat.
The migrants were turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the truck's driver, 29-year-old Reidel Garcia-Espino, was charged with child neglect, according to the release.
