Throughout October, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is participating in Pedestrian Safety Month alongside local and national partners. The campaign aims to raise awareness about safe practices for both pedestrians and motorists. FDOT is focusing on engineering measures to improve safety across Florida.
Pedestrians and bicyclists make up 28 percent of traffic fatalities in Florida from 2019 to 2023. In response, FDOT has implemented new road design and engineering measures on state-owned facilities, including improved intersection lighting, advanced moveable bridge technology, and safer mid-block pedestrian crosswalks. These efforts aim to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
"Our commitment to enhancing the safety of our communities is deeply reflected in the infrastructure improvements we’re proud to prioritize across the state which have the power to significantly reduce tragedies from occurring," said FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E. "As FDOT continues these efforts, we encourage everyone to join us in making our transportation system safer."
Under Governor DeSantis's leadership and with support from the Florida Legislature, FDOT has received significant investments totaling over $114 million for pedestrian-focused projects.
FDOT emphasizes that all road users must recognize their role in personal safety when using Florida's transportation system. Human behavior is a leading cause of pedestrian-related incidents statewide. Therefore, pedestrians and motorists are encouraged to follow safety measures to help prevent accidents.
