Be part of the solution to plastic pollution

Say no to plastics

Did you know that half of all plastic is manufactured to be used only once and then thrown away? That only 10% of all plastic is recycled, with the rest ending up in landfills and our environment? And did you know a water bottle can take up to 450 years to decompose in a landfill?

Plastic waste generated in coastal regions like Miami-Dade County is most at risk of entering our oceans, and each year 11 million metric tons of plastic waste ends up in our bays, on our beaches and in our ocean.

Once in Biscayne Bay and ocean, plastics break down into non-biodegradable “microplastics,” where they spread throughout the water column and wreak havoc on the marine food chain.

You can be part of the solution to cleaner streets and healthier bays, beaches, and oceans. Visit PlasticFreeJuly.org to take the challenge and discover ways you can reduce and eliminate the purchase and use of single-use plastics.

Businesses in Miami-Dade County that are committed to reducing single-use plastic are invited to join Plastic Free 305 where they will receive information, support and recognition for their efforts, plus an opportunity to partner with other businesses committed to reducing and eliminating single-use plastics in our environment.

To support local businesses that are eliminating single-use plastics, visit PlasticFree305.

Do your part and help protect the thousands of seabirds and sea turtles, seals and other marine mammals that are killed each year after ingesting plastic or getting entangled in plastic pollution.
