Osceola County issued the following announcement on Dec. 9.

A team representing the Osceola County Board of County Commissioners won its division in “Love to Ride Florida Challenge.”

Osceola County placed with 5,266 points in the division for organizations with between 500 and 1,999 employees. It is the second time the County has captured the win in the second largest division of the event.

The County’s team edged the Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners by 185 points in a competition that came down to the wire.

“It is wonderful to come out on top again this year but the purpose of this event is really about supporting a healthy lifestyle and creating awareness about sustainable transportation alternatives,” said County Commissioner Cheryl Grieb, who contributed 140 points to the winning effort. “My (bike) helmet is off to everyone who participated and helped the County capture this year’s challenge. I look forward to doing it bigger and better next year as we go for a ‘three-peat.’”

Overall, more than 1,600 people used their pedal power in the Love to Ride Florida challenge. Altogether they biked 308,134 miles and saved 11,642 pounds of CO2.

But some organizations - such as Osceola County rode further and encouraged more people to join them to top the leaderboard.

Team Osceola’s 20 riders cycled 1,356 miles during December. Top 10 individual point earners were: Andrew Sullivan (1,045), Miranda De Vries (933), Carol Platt (521), Carlos Castro (396), Linette Matheny (255), Mark Pino (237), Christina Jones (200), Dan Brady (167), Daniel Brady (152) and Isai Chavez (142).

This year’s challenge kicked off Mobility Week, which focused on safe, alternative transportation. A component of the challenge measured commutes to work and trips to stores and other similar places.
