FREE virtual classes and workshop on Florida-Friendly Landscaping

County of Hernando issued the following announcement on Aug. 27.

The Hernando County Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) program offers classes and workshops year-round to help residents learn how to save time, money and water when maintaining their lawns and gardens. Residents are invited to participate in free, online learning through virtual, interactive classes for the month of September. These virtual classes and in-person workshop will be presented by Florida-Friendly Landscaping Coordinator Lilly Browning.

The schedule of classes along with a short description of each is listed below. Residents can participate by clicking the Zoom meeting link associated with the class they wish to attend at the time it is offered and entering in the meeting ID and passcode. Videos will be available on the Florida-Friendly Landscaping Facebook and the Hernando County Government YouTube Channel after the class has been recorded.

Free Virtual Class: Diverse Lawn Areas – How to Break Away From Monotonous Monocultures

Residents are invited to virtually attend “Diverse Lawn Areas – How to Break Away From Monotonous Monocultures” on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at 10 a.m. In this class, participants will discuss chemical-free lawncare, acceptance of ‘weeds’ in the lawn, lawn alternatives and how to reduce turf areas and turn them into pollinator havens. Join Lilly Browning and her guest, Pasco County Florida-Friendly Landscaping Agent Frank Galdo, as they discuss breaking away from monotonous monocultures.

Free Virtual Class: Favorite Plants of Florida Pest Insects  

Residents are invited to virtually attend “Favorite Plants of Florida Pest Insects” on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 10 a.m. Learn about key pests and the plants they are most attracted to. Lilly Browning and Dr. William Lester will discuss control methods and learning the different between pest insects and beneficial allies.

Free Virtual Class: Florida’s Fabulous Fall Colors

Residents are invited to virtually attend “Florida’s Fabulous Fall Colors” on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at 10 a.m. Yes, you can find color in the autumn in Central Florida! Sometimes you just need to know where to look. Learn how to feel ‘fall-ish’ by noticing fabulous fall color in nature, and how to bring it to your landscape.

Free Virtual Workshop: Compost Bin and Rain Barrel Workshop  

Residents are invited to virtually attend a Rain Barrel and Compost Bin Workshop on Thursday, September 23, 2021. The Compost Workshop will be held from 6 – 6:40 p.m. Compost bins are free to Hernando County residents who attend the workshop One bin is allowed per household. The Rain Barrel Workshop will be held from 6:45 – 7:30 p.m. You must attend a workshop to purchase a rain barrel. Rain barrels are $50. A one-time water bill credit of $25 is available for customers of Hernando County Utilities for attending a workshop and taking a rain barrel home. If you are interested in attending a Rain Barrel and/or a Compost Bin Workshop, please email LillyB@HernandoCounty.us to register by September 21, 2021. Registration is required as class size is limited. Rain barrel and compost bin pick up will be Friday, September 24, 2021 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Hernando County Utilities Department located at 15365 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville.

Free Virtual Class: Plain Pollinators

Residents are invited to virtually attend “Plain Pollinators” on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 10 a.m. Join Lilly Browning and Dr. Bill Lester as they discuss some of the ‘ugly ducklings’ of the pollinator world, who do not often get a lot of attention. Their vital importance to our environment will be covered, as well as how to attract those ‘uncool kids’ to your landscape.
