The Tamiami Trail was removed six months ahead of schedule. The project was previously expected to be completed in January 2022. The trail cut off critical water flows in the Everglades when built and had become an environmental nightmare.
When The Tamiami Trail was originaly built, it was viewed as a marvel of engineering, but it blocked the natural flow of the everglades and overtime became an environmental problem, WINK News reported.
“Today, clean water is flowing into the Everglades as my administration continues to implement our bold vision for the continued protection and restoration of the Everglades and Florida's water resources" Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said in an August 3 post to his Twitter account.
There are many restoration projects taking place in the Everglades to help reverse some of the damages caused by humans, according to a release from DeSantis. These efforts are a part of the Central Everglades Planning Project. Another restoration projected was completed in Kissimmee last week, as reported by WINK.
These projects were approved by DeSantis in the "Achieving More Now For Florida’s Environment Executive Order." The goal of these projects is for them to be completed as soon as possible, according to the release. WINK reported that the projects create a better ecosystem in the Everglades which improves Florida's economy and protects its environment.
