After the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in record unemployment numbers, the state of Florida now bounces back by adding approximately 80,000 jobs in June.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity announced that the state added over 81,000 jobs in the month of June, nearly a 1% increase in jobs added over the previous month. While unemployment is still not quite back to pre-pandemic levels, the trend has continued in a strong positive direction.

“I think that tells me people want to get back to working and that there are lots of opportunities out there,” Vice President of CareerSource Suncoast Anthony Gagliano said, as reported by ABC7.

ABC7 also reported that there was a noticeable increase in job fairs as of recent weeks, with Florida JobLink hosting an event with 25 employers.

“Many employers are offering all kinds of bonuses, and they are relaxing requirements for college degrees and mandatory experience,” Florida JobLink Director Stephanie Sims said.

Geoff Luebkemann, senior vice president of the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association, said, “With the number of jobs open in the state, we applaud the governor’s initiative to end the federal component.” Luebkmann also said he is optimistic the industry’s workforce will return, CBS Miami News reported.

A large part of Florida's sustained recovery can be attributed to has been the decision by Gov. Ron DeSantis to opt-out of the extra federal unemployment insurance dollars and to reinstate the job search requirement to collect unemployment.

"People can go to work now," John Horne, the owner of Anna Maria Oyster Bar said, as reported by FOX 13 News. "It's safe to get back into work. It's safe to get back into hotels, restaurants, to travel. Let's all get back to work and let's take care of the people in our area."
