It's no secret that Florida has been a desirable place for retirement for millions of Americans going back decades. This month, what we all thought to be true has been affirmed, thanks to the findings of a study conducted by Bankrate.
In the results, Florida was crowned as the second-best state in the country to retire to. The metrics of the rankings included affordability, weather, culture and crime.
The ranking is seen as a win by top officials in Florida, including Sen. Rick Scott, who took to Twitter to say:
"With warm weather, low taxes & beautiful communities, it’s no wonder that Florida is ranked as the #2 best state to retire in. I encourage everyone to move to Florida to retire, relax & enjoy the sunshine!"
Florida was ranked second to only Georgia, which was ranked in the study as the top spot to retire.
Some other interesting information and tidbits emerged from the study, including the fact that over 20% of the current Florida population is of retirement age.
With regard to climate, Florida was ranked as the second-hottest state in the country, second only to Hawaii. It's clear that many retirees see Florida as a highly desirable destination. The only thing working against Florida according to the study was the state's tendencies to endure traumatic natural disasters and weather events.
