Senator Rick Scott has introduced a joint resolution to overturn the recent decision by the Washington, D.C. Council that blocks the implementation of federal tax cuts for district residents. The council’s move prevents local families and businesses from accessing benefits included in President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cuts, such as exemptions on tips and overtime pay, deductions for American-made car loan interest, and a senior tax deduction.

The resolution is supported in the Senate by Senators Joni Ernst, Bernie Moreno, Marsha Blackburn, Roger Marshall, Kevin Cramer, and Markwayne Mullin. Congressman Brandon Gill is leading a similar effort in the House of Representatives.

Senator Rick Scott stated: “President Trump and Republicans passed historic tax cuts into law last year, including No Tax on Tips and No Tax on Overtime to support hardworking American families and businesses and to let them keep more of their own money. I cut taxes over 100 times when I was Governor of Florida to help turn our economy around and businesses grow – which is exactly what President Trump is working to do on the federal level. It is absolutely absurd that self-interested D.C. bureaucrats would deliberately deny families and businesses from saving their own, hard-earned dollars. Government’s top priority should be serving families, not benefiting off them.”

Senator Marsha Blackburn added: “By decoupling the D.C. tax code from the Working Families Tax Cuts signed into law by President Trump, the D.C. Council is depriving hardworking Americans from benefitting from tax provisions that will put more money in their pockets. This resolution would ensure seniors, service industry workers, and other taxpayers in our nation’s capital can reap the benefits of the historic tax reforms secured in the Working Families Tax Cuts.”

Congressman Brandon Gill commented: “Thanks to President Trump, the Working Families Tax Cut stopped the largest tax hike since World War II, providing Americans with historic tax relief. The DC Council’s actions would block DC residents, namely service workers, from receiving these federal tax credits, from non-taxable tips and overtime, and from keeping their hard-earned money in their wallets. I am joining my colleague Sen. Rick Scott of Florida in putting a stop to the DC Council’s interference with America First tax relief.”

The legislation has received endorsements from several organizations including AMAC Action, DC Police Union, Independent Women’s Forum, International Franchise Association, National Association of Convenience Stores, National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors, National Restaurant Association, National Taxpayers Union, Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
