Daniel Balan, a 46-year-old from Bacau, Romania, has been indicted in federal court on multiple charges including conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity theft. The announcement was made by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.
Balan’s trial is set for August 18, 2025, before United States District Court Judge Mark Walker. If found guilty, he could face up to thirty years in prison for conspiracy and bank fraud charges, two years for aggravated identity theft charges, and ten years for possessing access devices.
The investigation is being conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, and the Tallahassee Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Justin M. Keen and Eric W. Welch are handling the prosecution.
It is important to note that an indictment is an allegation and not proof of guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations.
