Anna Paulina Luna, U.S. Representative for Florida’s 13th Congressional District, criticized Senate Majority Leader John Thune, saying he is preventing voter ID legislation tied to the SAVE America Act from moving forward in Congress.
Luna made the remarks amid an ongoing national debate over federal election integrity measures, which have become a key focus for Republican lawmakers in recent sessions.
She argued that responsibility for the bill’s stalled progress rests with Republican leadership, not Democrats, noting that the GOP controls both chambers and has procedural authority to bring legislation to a vote.
“John Thune is a problem. Really it’s him that is blocking voter ID. He has every ability to embrace the standing filibuster or remove the filibuster, Democrats are going to do it anyways. John Thune is doing the wrong thing. He’s not doing voter ID. He can’t honestly blame the Democrats for this because he’s the one in control,” said Luna.
She added that voter identification requirements represent what she considers the most important issue facing the country, and said leadership accountability should be tied to progress on the issue.
“The number one most important issue in the country now is voter ID. If we can’t deliver on that, then people like John Thune do not deserve to come back to Congress. Vote him out,” she added.
As Senate Majority Leader, Thune determines which bills reach the Senate floor. He has not scheduled a vote on the SAVE America Act, citing the likelihood that it would be blocked by a Democratic filibuster. Some Republican lawmakers have called for changes to Senate rules to eliminate the filibuster, though no formal vote on such a change has been brought forward.
The SAVE America Act would require people registering to vote in federal elections to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship and would also require voters to present photo identification when casting a federal ballot. The bill further directs states to maintain programs to identify and remove noncitizens from voter rolls on an ongoing basis, according to TrackBill.
A March 26, 2026 Senate cloture vote tied to voter ID provisions associated with the SAVE America Act failed 53–47, falling short of the 60 votes needed to advance. Both South Dakota Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds voted in favor of advancing the measure and its election integrity provisions, placing them on record in support of the effort.
Restoration of America launched a $5 million nationwide ad campaign on April 13, 2026 urging voters to contact their senators about moving forward with voter ID legislation tied to the SAVE America Act—a major advocacy push behind federal election-integrity legislation—according to Fox News.
Luna is serving her second term representing Florida’s 13th Congressional District in the U.S. House and holds assignments on both domestic oversight and national security committees including chairing the Task Force on Declassification of Federal Secrets.
