The Florida Panthers will conclude their season when they host the Detroit Red Wings at Amerant Bank Arena on April 15. Despite being back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, the Panthers faced a challenging year marked by numerous injuries that disrupted their pursuit of a third consecutive title.

Forward Matthew Tkachuk described the 2025-26 campaign as disappointing for both individual players and the team as a whole. “Not the year that anybody wanted individually or collectively, but there’s a whole lot we can learn from this year,” Tkachuk said. “Definitely a down year for everybody. It sucks, but it’s going to have to motivate us to come back stronger next year.” Tkachuk will return to the lineup after celebrating the birth of his first child.

The Panthers’ injury troubles continued as Tomas Nosek suffered a broken leg in Monday’s win over the New York Rangers, and Gustav Forsling is sidelined with a back injury. Mikulas Hovorka has been recalled from Charlotte (AHL) to fill in on defense. Head coach Paul Maurice commented on the team’s situation: “Outside of the real world, playing for the Panthers has been the most dangerous job in pro sports.” The team is expected to finish with nearly 600 man games lost due to injury.

Despite these setbacks, Florida has performed well recently, winning eight of its last ten home games. Mackie Samoskevich scored his sixth goal in nine games during Monday’s victory, while Cole Reinhardt extended his goal streak. Samoskevich acknowledged fan support: “We’ve been playing well these last few games… ending on a good one for them is huge.” Daniil Tarasov is set to start in goal against Detroit.

The Red Wings enter Wednesday’s game having missed out on playoff contention for ten straight seasons and have struggled since mid-March. Alex DeBrincat leads Detroit with 41 goals and 84 points this season.

Looking ahead, Tkachuk said: “We’re going to come back ready to roll next year… We’ve got a really, really good team.” Maurice reflected on overcoming adversity: “You go from five guys out to 10 guys out… now we’re over 14… How do we take this and turn it into something special for next year?”
