With the Florida legislative session underway, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) recently hosted its annual Small Business Day on March 13, 2025, in Tallahassee. The event brought together small business owners from all over Florida to discuss pressing issues, featuring discussions with several state representatives including Randy Maggard, Shane Abbott, Gallop Franklin, Ryan Chamberlin, and Tom Fabricio.
A significant part of the day was devoted to legislative updates important to small businesses. NFIB is particularly focused on the ongoing effort to eliminate the business rent tax, a long-standing concern for small businesses. The organization has previously reduced the tax from 6% to 2% and remains hopeful that the legislature will completely eliminate the remaining 2%.
NFIB is also closely monitoring several legislative proposals. Among these is support for a bill that permits employers to hire apprenticeship and internship workers at wages below the state minimum, provided it is part of a vocational training curriculum. This initiative is intended to furnish workers with necessary on-the-job experience.
However, NFIB opposes other legislative efforts seeking to reverse tort reform changes achieved in 2023. The organization remains firm on its stance to uphold reforms that addressed the challenges posed by the billboard attorney industry.
