Darian Mensah, a former Duke quarterback, has joined the Miami Hurricanes and is preparing for the upcoming football season, according to an April 17 announcement from the team.

Mensah’s arrival comes after a standout year at Duke, where he started 14 games and completed 67 percent of his passes for nearly 4,000 yards and 34 touchdowns. His performance earned him second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors and MVP awards in both the ACC Championship Game and Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. He was also a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award.

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal praised Mensah’s skills, saying, “A complete professional. Ownership of the system, great command, personality, arm talent, escapability, pocket presence, accurate, knowledge [and] a great energy about him as well. People gravitate to him and people are attracted to that kind of energy.”

Center Ryan Rodriguez added his support: “Mensah’s great. He uplifts everybody, good vibe around him. We love watching him play and when he’s doing his thing… It’s great to watch. He’s definitely going to lead us. It’s going to be electric.”

Mensah said that joining Miami feels like a natural progression after following former Hurricane Cam Ward’s career closely: “Watching Cam play… I feel like I’m the same,” Mensah said. “I think there’s a lot of similarities between Cam’s and [my] games… so it’s kind of just manifested this, being a Hurricane now.”

He also credited offensive line coach Alex Mirabal with helping prepare him for success at Miami: “He just knows so much… protections, fronts—just everything.” Mensah expressed excitement about working with Miami’s group of talented receivers such as Josh Moore and Coop Barkate.

Barkate described Mensah as calm under pressure on game days: “He’s always calm and collected in big moments… Off the field he’s really intelligent… When we met each other at Duke it was like a seamless integration.” Barkate also noted how Mensah is earning respect among teammates by building relationships on and off the field.

Reflecting on his journey from San Luis Obispo in California through Tulane to Duke before arriving at Miami—often far from family—Mensah said those experiences have prepared him well: “It made me who I am today… I’m super blessed for my journey.” Looking ahead to next season’s goals with Miami coming off their run to last year’s College Football Playoff Championship Game,
Mensah emphasized teamwork: “The work is the work… Talent only gets us nowhere.” He believes that maintaining high standards could help lead them toward another championship opportunity.
