Camerino Perez Perez, also known as “Squirrel,” a 41-year-old resident of Levy County, Florida, has been indicted by a federal grand jury. The indictment charges him with one count of possession of a firearm and ammunition by an illegal alien. This was announced by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.
Perez is set to appear for his arraignment in federal court before United States Magistrate Judge Midori Lowry on July 1, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. in Gainesville, Florida.
If found guilty, Perez could face up to fifteen years in prison.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted the investigation into this case. Assistant United States Attorney Adam Hapner is handling the prosecution.
It is important to note that an indictment is simply an allegation made by a grand jury that suggests a defendant has violated federal criminal law; it does not serve as evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a fair trial where the government must establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case falls under Operation Take Back America—a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations while protecting communities from violent crime perpetrators. This operation consolidates efforts from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
