Dr. Matthew Blair, an ENT Specialist at Gulf Coast Breathe Free, said on Instagram that acid reflux can irritate the nasal passages and lead to sinus infections, emphasizing the link between reflux and sinusitis.
“There is a connection between gastroesophageal reflux disease and sinusitis,” said Matthew Blair, according to Instagram. “Acid reflux can cause stomach acid to travel up the esophagus and reach the throat and nasal passages. This irritation can contribute to post-nasal drip, throat discomfort, and swelling in the sinus cavities. Chronic sinus inflammation may worsen reflux symptoms by causing nasal congestion.”
Research by the National Library of Medicine has established a potential connection between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and sinusitis, particularly chronic rhinosinusitis. GERD involves the backward flow of stomach contents into the esophagus, which may extend to the upper airways. This association is especially noted in patients with unexplained or treatment-resistant sinus symptoms.
A report from Houston Advanced Nose and Sinus found that as many as 25% of people with chronic sinusitis also experience depression, along with more familiar sinus infection symptoms such as headaches, facial pain, a cough, and nasal discharge. Depression caused by chronic sinusitis can be treated by addressing the sinus infection through medication or surgery like balloon sinuplasty.
According to the National Library of Medicine, chronic nasal congestion associated with sinus inflammation may increase negative pressure in the upper airway, potentially worsening reflux symptoms. Nasal obstruction can alter breathing patterns, especially during sleep, which may heighten reflux events. This bidirectional relationship highlights the importance of comprehensive ENT and GI evaluation in persistent cases.
Blair earned his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Immunology with a minor in chemistry from the University of Miami, according to Gulf Coast Breathe Free’s website. He obtained his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University in 2010 and completed his internship and residency in otolaryngology and facial plastic surgery at McLaren Oakland Hospital in Michigan. Blair achieved board certification in 2015.
