Florida is paying tribute to the late Senator Geraldine Thompson, a prominent figure in civil rights and voting rights advocacy. Amy Keith, Executive Director of Common Cause Florida, issued a statement reflecting on Thompson’s significant contributions.

“It is hard to put into words what Senator Thompson meant to Florida. She worked to make not just her district, but all of Florida, a better place to live,” said Keith. “Senator Thompson was a civil rights champion, a voting rights defender, a writer, a historian, and much more.”

Thompson was known for her efforts in defending voting rights and was instrumental in sponsoring the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Florida Voting Rights Act. Her dedication extended beyond legislative work as she actively stood up for disenfranchised communities whenever there were attempts to restrict voting access.

“When it comes to honoring Black history and civil rights history in our state, Senator Thompson was a driving force,” Keith added. “The fact is, no tribute or words are sufficient to describe our loss.”

Keith expressed hope that Thompson’s legacy would inspire Floridians to unite in defense of fundamental civil rights: “We can only hope that Senator Thompson’s life and remembrance encourage Floridians to band together and honor her with renewed purpose.”
