This week, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is collaborating with local and national transportation partners, law enforcement agencies, construction crews, and communities to observe National Work Zone Awareness Week from April 15-19. The campaign aims to highlight the risks faced by workers in work zones and emphasize the role of motorists in ensuring their safety.
Crashes in Florida’s work zones have involved workers, motorists, and passengers. From 2020 to 2023, over half of these incidents were front-to-rear impact collisions. This statistic underscores the need for attentiveness when driving through work zones where frequent stops and slowed traffic are common.
This year’s awareness week holds particular significance for FDOT following the loss of a team member who was struck by a motorist while setting up a work zone in January. “As our crews risk their lives to build and maintain the infrastructure we need to get home safely at the end of the day, remember that these individuals have something to get home to as well,” said FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E. He added that this tragic event highlights the dedication of workers despite inherent risks.
FDOT Assistant Secretary for Engineering and Operations Will N. Watts, Jr., P.E., emphasized caution: “During Work Zone Awareness Week and throughout the year, drive with great care and caution in work zones.” He noted that losing a colleague underlines the importance of safety measures.
To mitigate work zone crashes, FDOT collaborates with law enforcement to help motorists identify work zones and deter unsafe driving behaviors. FHP Colonel Gary Howze II stated, “Our partners at the Florida Department of Transportation are constantly improving roadways across Florida so that motorists can travel safely.”
Motorists are urged to drive alertly, adhere to speed limits in work zones, avoid distractions, be cautious of traffic pattern shifts, and maintain distance from other vehicles. By practicing responsible driving behaviors, everyone can contribute to safer roadways.
