The Florida Gators baseball team won a come-from-behind 9-6 victory over Kentucky on May 10, clinching the series at Condron Family Ballpark. Redshirt sophomore Caden McDonald played a key role in the win, both pitching and hitting for Florida.
The game was significant as it marked Florida’s fourteenth come-from-behind win of the season and their second comeback in this series. The Gators’ ability to rally has been notable throughout their schedule, showing resilience and depth across the roster.
All nine starters for Florida collected hits by the fifth inning. McDonald contributed by shutting out Kentucky across 4 1/3 scoreless, no-hit innings of relief while also hitting a go-ahead two-run home run in the fourth inning. He retired 13 of the 14 batters he faced, including twelve straight to finish his outing. “Early on, we gave up the run in the first and then obviously, we scored some runs there to answer back in the first… The idea was to go to Caden like we did last week against Oklahoma. And man, I can’t say enough about his performance. I mean, guy goes four and a third, doesn’t give up a hit and settles things down. Hits a home run, a key home run… just a really good finish to the weekend, for sure,” said Head Coach Kevin O’Sullivan.
O’Sullivan discussed McDonald’s emergence as an impact player: “There’s a little story behind it… he wanted to concentrate on pitching… but better late than never. And things like this happen all the time… So, he seems to be that guy for us right now.” O’Sullivan also highlighted Bowen’s contributions behind home plate: “Both catchers, for both teams. To catch that many games in such a short amount of time is impressive… He worked awfully hard this fall because he was injured… But he just gives a calming effect behind the plate.”
Florida improved its record against unranked teams this season and continued its strong performance against ranked opponents nationally. The team has now won eleven of its last fifteen Southeastern Conference series dating back to last season.
Looking ahead, Florida will close out its regular season with an away series at LSU from May 14-16.
