Bethune-Cookman shortstop Erick Almonte was named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hitter of the Week, the conference announced on Apr. 15 from its headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama.

The recognition marks Almonte’s first weekly award this season and is the ninth such honor for Bethune-Cookman University as a team during this campaign.

Almonte delivered a standout performance over four games, helping lead the Wildcats to an upset victory over defending national champions LSU, ranked number 24, and to a series win at Mississippi Valley State. The senior collected eight hits in 15 at-bats, including two doubles and his first two home runs of the season—one being a grand slam. He also drove in ten runs, walked twice, and scored four times.

The Wildcats are set to continue their season following another ranked upset achieved on Tuesday. Their next series will be against Alabama A&M Bulldogs starting Friday evening at Sliwa Stadium.

Almonte’s achievement highlights both his individual efforts and Bethune-Cookman’s strong showing so far this year.
