Governor Ron DeSantis held a press conference at the State Emergency Operations Center to provide updates on Hurricane Debby as it moved out of North Florida. The governor was joined by Kevin Guthrie, Executive Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM).
Hurricane Debby made landfall near Steinhatchee, Florida, at 7 am EDT. In preparation for this event, Governor DeSantis issued Executive Order 24-157 on August 2, which amended EO 24-156 and declared a state of emergency across 61 counties.
By 8 PM EDT, Tropical Storm Debby was positioned approximately 50 miles east of Valdosta, Georgia. The storm is projected to move slowly through northern Florida, with its center expected to cross southeast Georgia tonight and Tuesday. It currently has maximum sustained winds near 45 mph with stronger gusts.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) emergency response teams have completed preliminary assessments over more than 8,000 lane miles of state roads. Around 125 FDOT crews have removed debris from over 4,000 miles of roads in cut-and-toss operations.
The State Assistance Information Line (SAIL) is active for residents needing resources related to Hurricane Debby before and after its impact. The helpline number is 1-800-342-3557, offering assistance in both English and Spanish.
FDEM continues daily communications with all 67 counties to identify needs and ensure swift responses. Coordination efforts include state agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private sector partners to manage resource requests effectively.
Insurance Commissioner Yaworsky from the Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) contacted property and casualty insurance companies within the storm’s path. Insurers were directed to activate disaster claims-handling procedures promptly for affected policyholders.
