Today, Common Cause Florida reviewed its achievements for the year in protecting democracy and ensuring fair elections across the state. These efforts were highlighted in a statement by Amy Keith, the executive director of Common Cause Florida.
“We are encouraged by all the Floridians who came together to volunteer, advocate, and vote in the 2024 General Election,” Keith stated. She emphasized the organization’s commitment to training nonpartisan volunteers and reaching out to thousands of voters, regardless of their party affiliation.
Reflecting on recent electoral events, Keith expressed satisfaction with voter decisions against two proposed amendments: “As we reflect on the election at year end, we are thrilled that Floridians spoke up and rejected the legislature’s attempts to gut public campaign financing with Amendment 6 and make school board races partisan with Amendment 1.”
Keith underscored the importance of defeating these amendments as a triumph for democratic principles. “The defeat of these Amendments was a victory for democracy,” she said. She noted that Common Cause Florida led efforts against Amendment 6 because it believed public campaign financing empowers ordinary citizens and supports candidates committed to serving their communities rather than those backed by significant financial resources.
Looking ahead to 2025, Keith outlined future priorities: “As we look ahead to 2025, our focus will be on ensuring that all registered Florida voters are aware that they need to re-request their vote-by-mail ballot again for 2025-26 and on continuing to call out big money in politics, protect voting rights, and advocate for government accountability and transparency for all Floridians.”
