Catholic Vote President Brian Burch praises Florida legislation that will require state IDs to list biological sex rather than pretend “genders.”
“Leftists continue to misuse the English language, claiming that sex is ‘assigned at birth.’” Burch said. “Sex is assigned in the womb by God, and government ID cards should not contain false information regarding whether a person is a man or a woman. People are free to pretend they are one of the many made-up ‘genders,’ but they do not have the right to falsify government documents.”
Florida House Bill 1639 not only requires a person’s actual sex to be listed on state IDs such as driver’s licenses, but also requires insurance companies to cover “de-transitioning” care, and it restricts “gender-affirming” therapy.
House co-sponsor Rep. Dean Black said the bill recognizes “that there is such a thing as a man and woman.” In the house the bill was passed out of committee for a vote of the full chamber, but observers believe the legislation will not be acted on in the senate.
In January the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles issued a memo preventing people from changing their gender on state ID documents. Robert Kynoch, deputy executive director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, wrote in the memo, “Permitting an individual to alter his or her license to reflect an internal sense of gender role or identity, which is neither immutable nor objectively verifiable, undermines the purpose of an identification record.” A statement from the department also said, “You do not get to play identity politics with your driver license.”
Madison, Wisconsin-based Catholic Vote is an advocacy organization that wants to “inspire every Catholic in America to live out the truths of our faith in public life,” according to the group’s website. Founded in 2008, its president is Brian Burch.
