A man from Escondido, California, who is a registered sex offender, has been sentenced to life in federal prison for distributing child sexual abuse material and attempting to entice a minor. Michael Gordon Douglas, 48, received the sentence on August 25, 2025, from U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon. In addition to the life sentence, Douglas was ordered to serve a lifetime of supervision as a sex offender and pay $25,000 in restitution.

Douglas was convicted by a federal jury in May after a five-day trial. He faced seven counts of distributing child sexual abuse material and one count of attempted enticement of a minor.

Evidence presented at trial showed that in 2023 Douglas communicated with an undercover agent whom he believed was the mother of an eight-year-old girl. During these communications, Douglas sent child sexual abuse material to the agent and arranged to meet the child for sex. On the day they planned to meet in California, Douglas saw law enforcement officers and tried to escape by car. According to court records, his female passenger jumped out shouting that Douglas had a grenade and intended harm. He then displayed what appeared to be a real grenade—later determined by authorities to be a replica—and briefly held off police before being taken into custody.

Douglas had previous convictions in California from 2011 for offenses involving distribution and possession of images depicting minors engaged in sexual conduct.

U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida stated: “The Justice Department is committed to combating child sexual exploitation.” Acting Special Agent in Charge Jose Figueroa of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Miami and Special Agent in Charge Shawn S. Gibson of HSI San Diego joined him in announcing the sentence.

Homeland Security Investigations agents from West Palm Beach, Florida and Oceanside, California investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Justin Chapman and Adam McMichael prosecuted it.

The prosecution falls under Project Safe Childhood—a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at addressing online child exploitation through coordinated efforts among federal, state, and local agencies (more information can be found at www.justice.gov/psc).
