Attorney General James Uthmeier’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit has announced the arrest of Akimmia Lewis for financially exploiting an elderly man in Escambia County.

In a statement, Attorney General Uthmeier emphasized, “We will not tolerate those who take advantage of vulnerable Floridians for personal gain. Our office will continue to aggressively pursue criminals who abuse positions of trust and exploit the elderly.”

The investigation revealed that Lewis misused her position as the victim’s power of attorney by withdrawing funds from his bank account. Between August 9, 2022, and February 28, 2023, she transferred approximately $46,788.60 to her accounts and made cash withdrawals without benefiting the victim, who was living in a nursing facility.

Lewis faces one count of Exploitation of an Elderly Person or Disabled Adult (under $50,000), a second-degree felony that could result in up to 15 years in prison. The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit will handle prosecution through an agreement with the State Attorney’s Office for the First Judicial Circuit.
